Here is a list of links to resources providing more information about pet healthcare.  Pet insurance providers are toward the bottom of this page

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)  website offers just about everything you need to know about pet health issues.

Idexx Laboratories has put together a great informational website regarding heartworm disease and diseases carried by ticks.  Check out the incidence map, which shows reported cases in each of the 50 states.                                            http://www.dogsandticks.com/

The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is an internet subscription service that veterinarians can elect to belong to. It is a great source for veterinarians to get peer to peer feedback on medical cases, and provides information on the latest innovations and topics in veterinary medicine. Allenstown Animal Hospital is is member if this network. VIN has added an advertisement free, unbiased informational website for pet owners as well

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is the government body that regulates and makes recommendations for controling infectious diseases.  Infections that humans can acquire from animals are called zoonotic (zoe-o-not-ick).  Annual fecal (stool) examinations are recommended for all pets, not just because parasites can affect your pet, but also the possibility of transmission to their owners. The CDC has information about these zoonotic diseases and associated risks on their website.

Cornell University has one of the nations leading veterinary labs and their web site is often a great place to get up to date information on pet health issues.

Pet Insurance Providers

Listed below are some pet insurance providers.  Pet insurers, unlike human insurers, work directly with you, the pet owner.  Fees are not negotiated with the veterinary hospital, we just fill out a claim form and you get reimbursed for whatever the plan allows, directly from the insurer.  There's no copay system, network providers, or anything like that  You still pay for services at the time they are performed.  One added benefit is that it even covers medical services if you are traveling with your pet and he/she needs medical care at a different hospital, or emergency clinic. We don't endorese any plan over the other, so the number in which they are listed is random.  They are all different and provide varying degrees of coverage.  We do feel that it is a good safety net against the unexpected.

We have several client who already have pet insurance and the number is growing every year. Dr Watkins even got a policy for her son's new kitten.  While she is able to provide routine medical care during his visits home from college in New York,  Dr. Watkins got him a major medical pet insurance policy because he lives too far away for her to help out if there is ever a medical emergency.
